It is understandable that residents in Champlain Towers have been and still are less likely to make use of the recycling bins since they were moved outside. A room is now ready for the bins to be brought in and that will hopefully happen in the next week. You will need your FOB to access this room. Hopefully, everyone will then make the effort to use the recycling bins and reduce landfill.

What is already in that room is a container for used batteries. These contain harmful elements which seep into the earth and eventually end up in the water table.

  • Newspaper and flyers
  • Magazines and catalogues
  • Telephone books
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Cereal and cracker boxes (remove plastic liners)
  • Shoe boxes, detergent boxes (remove plastic handles) Writing paper, computer paper
  • Hard and soft cover books
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls
  • Gift wrapping paper, greeting cards, envelopes (no ribbon) Packing paper used for moves
  • Clean paper shopping bags
  • Clean pizza boxes, clean frozen dinner boxes


Items should be placed loose in the bins, not in plastic shopping bags. These items cannot be opened by the automated sorting machines at the recycling facility and can damage the equipment.


  • Metal food cans, rinsed out
  • Soft drink cans
  • Jar lids
  • Aluminum food containers, clean or food soiled Aluminum foil, clean or food soiled
  • Empty paint cans, lids removed
  • Empty aerosol cans (paint, hair spray, whipped cream etc.)
  • Spiral wound containers with metal rim (frozen orange juice, Pringles)


  • Tubs and lids (yoghurts ice cream, margarine, dips etc.)
  • Plastic bottles, jars and jugs ( rinsed or cleaned)
  • Clear plastic egg cartons, lettuce and spinach plastic boxes
  • Single serve yoghurt containers
  • Flower pots, planting trays
  • Plastic pails, metal handle removed


  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Drink boxes
  • Soup boxes

The following items should NOT be put in the bins, but in the regular garbage:

  • Metal clothes hangers
  • Scrap metal, cutlery
  • Styrofoam, meat trays
  • Plastic shopping bags
  • Coffee cup lids
  • Motor oil containers
  • Hard plastic toys
  • Light bulbs
  • Mirrors
  • Drinking glasses
  • Window glass
  • Ceramics - dishes, plates etc.
  • Bags containing dog stool
